DirectorXu’sHandwriting

DirectorXuwasanhonestanduprightcadre,
alsohewasgoodatChinesehandwriting.Whenhe
hadasparetime,heoftenpracticedcalligraphy
afteramodel,suchas“OccultTower”and
“TreasurePagoda”.
Oneday,bossWangwenttohisofficeand
sawhimwritingonpaper.Thebosssaid,“You
handwritingissogreatthatitlookslikeadragon
livelyandvigorousincalligraphy.Youaremore
excellentthanaChinesecalligrapher.”Onhearing
this,directorXusmiledandsaid,“Don’tflatterme.
Iamnotaprofessionalcalligrapher,butjustfor
killingtime.”BossWangasked,“Willyousellyour
works?”DirectorXusaid,“Ifyoulikeit,Iwillsend
youoneandit’sfreeofcharge.”BossWangsaid,
“Thankyouverymuch!Ipayyouofcourse.”And
thenhelefttwentythousandYuanfordirectorXu.
Afterthat,peoplecametohisofficefor
Chinesehandwritingoneafteranother.Todayboss
Li,tomorrowbossZhaoandthedayafter
tomorrowbossQian.DirectorXuthought,“Many

peoplelovemyhandwritinganditmeansmy
worksisreallygoodenough.”Someoneproposed
thatheshouldhaveanexhibitioninpublic.He
choseonehundredpiecesofworkstobemounted
andframed,andthenafamousexhibitiongallery
heldapersonagehandwritingshowinthecity.
Onthedayhisworksexhibitedinthegallery,
therecamemanypeopletovisithisworks.The
exhibitionlastedforfivedays.Hedidn’texpected
thathisworkswereallsoldup,85piecesfor
twentythousandeach,and15piecestotallywere
boughtbyabigboss.DirectorXuearnedmuch
moneyandhefeltveryhappy.
Afterayear,directorXuretired.Oneday
whenhehadawalkonasquare,hesawaman
sellingcalligraphyandpaintingsontheground.
Hesawoneofthecalligraphieswashisownworks.
Hecuriouslyaskedhim,“Howmuchisthis
handwriting?”Thesellersaid,“Ifyoulikeit,it
doesn’tmatterhowmuchmoneyitis!”Itmade
directorXushocked,andthenhewalkedaheadto
pretendtoappreciateotherworks.Unexpectedly,
he saw one piece of calligraphy by
newly-appointeddirectorandheaskedagain,
“Howmuchisthisonethen?”Thesellersaid,“I’ll
giveyouadiscountfortwentythousandYuan.If
youreallywantthisone,wewillpresentyou
anotherpieceofhandwriting,theoneyouinquired
justnow.”
Hewassosadtohearwhatthesellersaid.
