The Clay Figurine
By Fei Niao
The clay figurines that Hong made were so lifelike that they were very popular with everyone. He didn’t care how much people paid. Everyone could only spend 50 yuan on his clay figurine, or even a cigarette for one. However, During the time that Hong was making clay figurines, others should keep silent. If not, he would pack his things up and leave at once, no matter how much others felt embarrassed.
One day, a stranger came to visit Hong and asked Hong to make a clay figurine like himself. The clay in Hong’s hands gradually became a clay figurine like the man in front of him. Hong closed his eyes, with his hands deftly dancing. Then he had a brainwave a bird fell into the net. Hong opened his eyes slowly, finding the sparkle of the clay figurine in his hands were twinkling like bright stars.
Staring at the clay figurine for a moment, the stranger threw it on the ground, saying, “The eyes don’t like mine. I would like you to make another one tomorrow.” With these words, the stranger went away. Hong felt too puzzled to sleep well in the evening. He was still perplexed by the bird. As he knew, the bird would fly out the net, or struggle to death in the end. Hong decided to keep the bird before it disappeared. Hong started to make another clay figurine like himself. The clay figurine was so vivid that the sparkle of its’eyes were flashing the light.
The stranger came again. Looking at the clay figurine, he said with surprise, “Perfect!” Then he took the clay figurine away ,leaving eight bundles of money. Hong tried to call the man back. However, so deeply was he obsessed with the money that he couldn’t utter a word.
From then on, whoever wanted to get a clay figurine should pay a deposit according to the price list. In order to keep customers satisfied, Hong allowed them to participate in the design. More and more paid a visit to him. Different from before, when Hong made clay figurines, customers were always making criticisms and suggestions. At that time, his hands mechanically moved, remained expressionless and his mind went blank.
One night, outside somebody said, “It seems as if the house has been deserted for 3 years.” Upon hearing that, Hong was surprised. “ Didn’t I live here these years? ”hong said to himself. All of a sudden, he bent down. He was dismayed to find his feet covered with moss.
“When did I become a clay figurine? ”
