　　在法庭上，法官问农夫：“你为什么偷玉米？”
　　农夫哭丧着脸说：“家里没有吃的了，我妻子病了，孩子上学连饭都吃不饱……”
　　这时旁听席上有人说：“别听他胡说，他家里有许多钱财就是舍不得拿出来，这家伙狡猾着呢。”
　　法官敲了一下桌子，严厉地说：“请安静，下面宣布本院判决：由被告付原告100元人民币……”
　　农夫委屈地说：“我偷了他的玉米不值100元，如果我有100元就不会偷他的玉米了，如果我有玉米就不会让妻子孩子饿肚皮了，这种判决不公平。”
　　法官说：“不许强词夺理，就这样判了。”
　　农夫痛苦地辩解着：“我没有这100元，你这样判是不是太无情了？”
　　法官说：“判你交100元是法官的责任，因为你触犯了法律，但作为一个男人来说我非常同情你的遭遇，这100元由我替你垫付。”
　　法官说着就在众目睽睽下掏出自己的100元交给书记员，并且说：“对你这样的人我有义务帮助你……”
　　起初人们一愣，谁也没想到法官会这样处理这件事；接着人们被感动了，许多人掏出自己的钱为农夫捐款——你100元，他100元，还有人干脆就往农夫怀里扔钱。几分钟后，农夫的怀里抱了一堆钱票，他激动地说：“都说世态炎凉，法官无情，其实不然，这人心也是热的。我代孩子谢谢大家了！”

　　“What caused you to steal his corn?” At the court, the judge was inquiring a farmer.
　　“There is no food left at home. My wife is in poor health. My school-age kid is starving. …” said the farmer, with a depressed look.
　　“He’s a liar. He possesses a big property. What a mean and cunning chap!” protested someone at the public gallery.
　　“Silence! Listen to this judgment: the defendant is to pay the demandant 100yuan.” Knocking at his desk, the judge declared sternly.
　　“The corn I stole is worth less than 100yuan; if I had had 100yuan, I wouldn’t have stolen his corn; if I had the corn, my wife and kid wouldn’t feel hungry. It’s unfair!” The farmer argued, in much grief.
　　“Stop your nonsense. The case is settled.” said the judge.
　　“What a merciless judge you are! I have no 100yuan at all, you know?” The farmer continued, in agony.
　　“It’s my duty to give the sentence of a 100yuan fine, since you have broken the law; as far as I’m concerned, I feel sympathetic with your condition. Let me pay the 100yuan fine on your behalf.” With this the judge, in the presence of everyone, took out a 100yuan note, handed it to the engrossment clerk, and said to the farmer, “I have the obligation to give you a hand.”
　　Stupefied at first and then moved by the judge’s unexpected act, many people took out money to donate. 100yuan. 200yuan. Some even directly slipped money into the farmer’s pocket.
　　“By all accounts, snobbery is the way of the world and a judge shows no mercy; that’s not the case. A human heart is warm, indeed. I appreciate all this, for my kid’s sake.” A few minutes later, with a stack of notes in hand, the farmer said, in excitement.
