Memory
by Chi Zhanyong
He walked on like a child, gazing around with his fresh eyes.
She followed him, quietly. Even now, she wouldn’t believe the fact that he had lost his memory in the car accident. And the doctor had said, with her help he might gradually return to normal.
“Then what shall I do?”she sighed to herself.
He kept walking and walking. Leisurely and unconsciously. Finally, he entered the central park, and stopped under a poplar tree, the tallest one in the park.
“This is a poplar tree, isn’t it? It’s awesome, indeed!”he looked upward.
“It’s been growing here more than twenty years. We used to sit here.”she was reminded of those good old days when he was young, handsome and considerate.
“Look, there is inscription.”he touched the characters carved in the trunk.
“For ever. We carved that.” her tears streamed. How could it be for ever? Oh, poor guy! If only he hadn’t been drinking and gambling!
“Look at the shed over there.”he shouted, “Let’s go.”
It was the shed where they had made their oaths, where they had listened to the Cowherd and the Girl Weaver express their love on Double-Seventh Day.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light in her mind. She looked at him in doubt.
“You haven’t lost your memory, have you?”she asked, distantly.
“Yes, I have. I’v left all my past behind. I’ll start a new life. Shall we make our oaths again, darling?”
Tearfully, they held each other in the cool shade of the shed. And the Divorce Agreement was stealthily torn into pieces.
