Self-esteem
By Liang Xiaoping
It is quite a while since I came sitting on the flower-stand by the road, nearby which there is a crossing. I enjoy sitting here and watching the bustling people, because I like all boisterous places.
Several passers-by ask me about the way. Certainly I know the way, or rather I should have known it, since I have been living here for more than 70 years. I know the way like the palm of my own hand; I have quite a few friends here; I am acquainted with all grass and trees here.
Yet I do not talk but to wave my hand, smiling.
“An old dumb guy!” Then they pass by.
Somewhat annoyed, since I have sharp ears, I really mean to chase after them and argue with them. However, I fail to stand up, with my legs feeling numb for too long a sitting.
I wait till the policeman calls it a day. The young man comes over to me as he steps off the traffic tower. I am patting my numb legs and expecting him with a smile when he approaches me with a trot. I struggle to straighten myself, handing him the name card with my address on it. “Sir, I got lost.”
I am a retired policeman and tend to forget things these days; with my self-esteem, I am ashamed of asking others about the way.
