Encounter
By Chen Shumao
I used to see her at the exit of the subway station at 8 am. She was a lively young lady.
Every time, she smiled faintly at me and hurried out of the station as I hurried into it with a polite return smile.
As long as I saw her, I wouldn’t be late for work. She appeared like my clock.
One day, I had hardly had the time to smile a greeting to her when she disappeared out of the station in a flash. Unconsciously I checked my watch. It was 8:10. I raced into the station. Fortunately I wasn’t late.
In time, her presence and her smile had indeed made a measure of my clock.
Once, she was not present at the exit at the time. I slowed my pace. Yet she didn’t show up. Even at the last glance before stepping into the station, I didn’t capture any trace of her. Then I was 5 minutes late for work.
Another time, she appeared in my view, a young man holding her hand. Just as usual, she smiled faintly at me. I was frozen with a sudden sting, so much so that I smiled back mechanically and drowsily moved into the station. Then I was 30 minutes late for work. I got on the wrong train.
