The Shuttle
By Zhao Jinji
A shuttle used to run routinely from the Institution to downtown at noontime. For business or personal things, the staff on the ride enjoyed the convenience, feeling at ease and justified.
Thanks to XX, whose husband was the president at the time … Someone reported, mysteriously, she was scheduled to go downtown for some physical treatment in the afternoon. But no one took it serious.
Later on, XX retired from office. Someone nervously warned that, the shuttle would be soon cancelled. Dubiously, the staff continued to wait, at the usual place, at the usual time, for the routine shuttle.
One day, the shuttle broke down on its way; it was taken off for a major repair and then it was forgotten. When the day’s work was over, the staff rushed out for the public bus, and gradually got used to it.
