Heaven Doesn’t Believe in Blood
By Ren Zhi
In 1990s Lao Li worked as a policeman, a captain, to be exact.
When serving in the army, Lao Li had won several merits, thus being promoted from platoon leader to assistant company commander, to company commander, up to assistant battalion commander. After leaving the army, Lao Li resolutely put on a uniform of olive green and reported to the police camp as captain of the special squad.
Lao Li offered meticulous care to his teammates; in return they loved him and respected him. He was easygoing, never throwing his weight around, so much so that he was addressed “Lao Li” instead of “Captain”. He answered each greeting smilingly. He was straightforward and capable of drinking an ocean of wine.
One day Lao Li went to a teammate’s wedding. Although his throat was unbearably thirsty for wine, Lao Li didn’t even sip a drop of it, as he was on duty. Late that night, when Lao Li got a call, reporting that an accident had happened to another mate on duty, he jumped to his feet and rushed out into darkness with the driver. It was drizzling when the shabby police cruiser suddenly got stuck in an accident on its way. Awfully injured on the passenger seat, Lao Li was taken to hospital in a coma.
There was bleeding inside his skull. The condition was very serious. Tearfully, Xiao Liu pleaded that the doctor should try everything to save dear captain, dear Lao Li. “You pay by cash?” The doctor asked.
“We don’t have cash on us. We are policemen. This is an insured injury. Our payment is guaranteed.” said Xiao Liu.
The doctor ordered that Lao Li be taken to emergency room, where his wounds were bound up.
“Will you operate on him now?” Xiao Liu asked.
“You are to pay the deposit first.” said the doctor.
“Where to get the money so late at night?” Xiao Liu cried out.
When morning came, the special squad filed into hospital, only to be informed that half an hour before Lao Li had passed away to Heaven because of his excessive bleeding.
“We have blood, warm blood!” All teammates cried out.
“But Heaven doesn’t believe in blood!” said the doctor.
