A Pager
By Ren Zhi
A pager was a rare thing in early 1990s, when telecommunications were not well developed. Xiao Lin wanted so much to have one pager whose rings could always attract the passers-by.
One day, Xiao Lin was crossing the road with several colleagues when a speeding motor-bike knocked him down. Xiao Lin, who was in a coma, was immediately sent to hospital, as the motorcyclist was caught on the spot.
The chief of Xiao Lin’s unit paid much attention to the accident, asking the escorting colleagues to tackle it appropriately. The motorcyclist had no license, which favored Xiao Lin, who then got paid a compensation of 6000yuan. This was more or less a sum equaling to a used motor-bike’s worth. The motorcyclist said his wife was unemployed and his kid at tender age.
Half a month later when Xiao Lin got out of the hospital, the chief said he had personally assigned the escorting colleagues to take care of the accident and got the compensation, so Xiao Lin was to deposit 2000yuan in the unit’s small cashbox. Thinking he had owed much to his colleagues, Xiao Lin held a 1000yuan’s banquet to express his gratitude. Then with tears in his eyes Xiao Lin paid another 1000yuan to buy a pager for himself.
Another half of the month passed and Xiao Lin went to the hospital for a re-examination, only to be informed by the doctor that he had had one ear’s hearing declined. It was an after-effect. |
