Memoirs
By Liang Xiaoping
While at primary school, I found some memoirs in my dad’s bookcase. “Who wrote these books?” I asked. “My seniors. They have gone through the Long March.” said my dad. “But you joined in the Long March, too. Why don’t you write your memoir?” I said. “I needn’t.” said my dad.
While at high school, I found more memoirs in my dad’s bookcase. “Who wrote these books?” I asked. “My mates. They have fought the Anti-Japanese War.” said my dad. “But didn’t you fight the Anti-Japanese War, too? Why don’t you write your memoir?” I said. “I needn’t.” said my dad.
While at college, I found still more memoirs in my dad’s bookcase. “Who wrote these books?” I asked. “My subordinates. They have fought the Liberation War.” said my dad. “But didn’t you fight the Liberation War, too? Why don’t you write your memoir?” I said. “I needn’t.” said my dad.
While working these years, I found my dad’s bookcase completely filled with memoirs. “Who wrote these books?” I asked. “My junior mates. They have participated in the construction of Motherland.” said my dad. “But didn’t you participate in the construction of Motherland, too? Why don’t you write your memoir?” I said. “I needn’t.” said my dad.
Aging day after day, my dad was finally coming to his life’s end. “Dad, we know very little about your whole life; why don’t you write down your experiences?” I suggested, gazing at my dad on the hospital bed.
“Since I joined the army, I’ve been engaged in confidential work in national military. For all my life, I have had no memories of my own.”
